Our Campus Network DNS services moved in-house last month. Instructions to update your settings were posted to FirstClass conference "IT News" before the switch-over. It's optional, of course, but a good detail if your computer uses a static IP address on the LAN.

Dial-in users: The second Remote Access dial-in unit has 'passed on', one remains.
We will continue on with the (one) main remote access unit serving eight lines for the moment, and recommend that everyone using dialin services utilize the main number to ensure a connection for the time being.
ras1.loomis.org is up, answers the main dialin number. 8 ports
ras2.loomis.org is down.
We apologize for any inconvenience.

Our Network, Our Home.
As we move closer to the mark for replacing our Local Area Network (LAN):
We'll be doing everything we can to reduce the transition period from the old Hubs and Routers to the new Layer 3 Switches. Servers and Offices that operate during the summer months will be the first priority for reconnection.
This is a much more far-reaching upgrade than anything we've done in recent years. All department heads will be advised of the process, estimated time off-line during the changeover, order of reconnection, etc. Our hope is that for most offices, this will occur within a single day. Any questions regarding the new system or its capabilities should be directed to the I.T. Help Desk.
We'll keep you posted as the details are finalized.

Luckily, there have been few new virus threats worthy of posting detailed data here, of late. But it's still worth a fresh reminder or two:
Update your virus software regularly. Once a year is really not enough. Determining whether the warning email you get is about a valid risk or not has become a larger issue in the last year. We always check with an authoritative source before disseminating any such information.
Is our favorite first stop.
Our FirstClass email system has stabilized now that there is little traffic in the system, and it has been moved to another server. - Watch for several Airport wireless network nodes, coming soon!
A note of thanks :
Our department's breadth and depth of services has grown a great deal during the 1999-2000 academic year. We owe a large part of our success to the entire Loomis Chaffee community, from the Administrators and Trustees that are assisting us in fulfilling our mission, to the I.T. Student Assistants that have pitched in to get many, many things done.
We couldn't have done it without you!
